Weekly Reflection

Great Spirit Prayer

Oh, Great Spirit, whose voice I hear in the wind, whose breath gives life to all the world.

Hear me; I need your strength and wisdom.

Let me walk in beauty, and make my eyes ever behold the red and purple sunset.

Make my hands respect the things you have made and my ears sharp to hear your voice.

Make me wise so that I may understand the things you have taught my people.

Help me to remain calm and strong in the face of all that comes towards me.

Let me learn the lessons you have hidden in every leaf and rock.

Help me seek pure thoughts and act with the intention of helping others.

Help me find compassion without empathy overwhelming me.

I seek strength, not to be greater than my brother, but to fight my greatest enemy Myself.

Make me always ready to come to you with clean hands and straight eyes.

So when life fades, as the fading sunset, my spirit may come to you without shame.

Little Shop of Horrors

What a fantastic production we enjoyed last week. The Little Shop of Horrors had everything from outstanding acting, singing, dancing and even a live band. The costumes (so many shades of green), props and lighting were first class, and families who had seen many productions over the years commented it was again one of the best performances ever! The joy on the students’ faces as they performed and gathered afterwards ensured it was all worthwhile.

Special thanks to Production Leaders Jessica Chelotti, Amy Rowley, Ashlee Hughes, Amy Bandeira, Dan Askew and the rest of the Production crew for putting such a fabulous show together.

Premier League

We wish our Year 9 Premier League teams all the best in the next round of their Sports competitions tomorrow.

2020 Subject Selections

Year 10 and 11 students need to finalise their 2020 Subject Selections with their Final Selection page (from Selection Guide) with a copy of their Web Preferences receiptby Friday, 9th August. This Wednesday, we are holding Year 11 2020 Subject Selection Family interviews. I look forward to seeing many families there. Please ensure these are submitted on time as late submissions may result in subject preferences being missed as VCE numbers will then be processed and initial blockings completed. Students will be given their initial allocations later in the term. VCAL students will be notified of their application success or not.

Next week has two major evening events. Year 9 students and parents/guardians are invited to join us next Wednesday, 7th August for our Year 10 2020 Information Evening. I strongly encourage all families to attend as the Year 10 Elective selection process has changed from previous years. On Thursday 8th August, we hold our annual VTAC Information evening for our current Year 12s and families. This evening has proved highly valuable to parents and students in selecting their tertiary preferences for the following year.

Year 7, 2021 Enrolments

Enrolment applications for Year 7, 2021 are due by Friday 23rd August. All families who apply are required to make an appointment with their Parish Priest.

NAIDOC Week

Last week our school celebrated NAIDOC week (officially held over the school holidays) which in part acknowledges the successes of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. At CRC Melton students were encouraged to participate in a variety of ways. Each morning students reflected during homeroom and participated in a homeroom challenge where they were required to recognise the faces of around 40 significant Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. Each homeroom displayed the NAIDOC theme poster and were encouraged to talk about the history of this week. During lunchtime students could participate in Indigenous games or attend Art club and complete an art activity. The library displayed Year 7 Humanities work from their Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander History unit and the library also provided a selection of books to read, movies to watch and decorated the library entrance in the theme of this year's NAIDOC week – Voice, Treaty, Truth. We also hung our welcome banner made by past VCAL students which always takes pride of place during these significant weeks. Staff, special guests and our student FIRE Carriers (Friends Igniting Reconciliation through Education) attended a morning tea where our Local Member of Parliament Mr Steve McGhie was in attendance. He was very positive and encouraged our student FIRE Carriers to continue in their efforts to promote education within our school community.

Premier League

On Tuesday 23rd August our Year 9s began their premier league playing against CRC Caroline Springs. After weeks of training our students were very excited to put their skills to the test and play in their first match of the season. It was a successful day out with 5 wins from 8 games, and a few very close and unlucky losses. Our boys’ basketball team were trailing for the entire game and in the last few minutes hit the front and won the game by 3 points, a great display of determination and hard work by our year 9 basketball boys. This week we play Caroline Chisholm. Be sure to read next week’s newsletter for more sport updates.

Scores from round 1 are below

Library News

Sarah Clewer of Year 12 has written a novel: A Spell for an Eye

If you were fated to become a 'Saviour' to a planet and chosen by a meteor programmed to find help, what would you do?

At only four years old, Celeste Teal and her best friend, Miranda, were struck by a meteor. Both girls developed mysterious powers after the accident, with Celeste gaining ice powers, and Miranda the ability to control water. Five years later, Celeste's parents die and she is torn away from Miranda and forced to attend a strict boarding school in Antarctica. Over the years, her powers advance, and she is eventually reunited with Miranda. They both soon discover a third victim of the meteor strike - Vanessa, a girl with the ability to wield fire.

After an attack with an old enemy in the caves of Antarctica, the trio discover an ancient written legend composed and kept in the archives of six planets within the solar system. As well as attempting to learn their place in the legend, they must gain each other's trust in order to combine their powers to defeat foes and win over the evil that has taken Antarctica and threatens the world.

During this journey, Celeste meets a mysterious admirer who appears to know everything about her, including her parents' deaths. Is he a friend, or is he after something? And why does he always disappear before Celeste can talk to him?

Should you wish to purchase a copy of Sarah’s book, please pay $20 to the College to pre-order. Orders will be accepted until Friday, 2nd August. Payment can be made by cash or credit card at the Office.

On this date, the College will purchase the number of ordered copies and distribute to purchasers on delivery from the publisher.

We congratulate Sarah on her fine achievement and wish her well in her future endeavours as an author.
