Weekly Reflection

“There is neither Jew nor Greek, slave nor free, male nor female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.” Galatians 3:28

On May 27 1967, Australians voted to finally include the nation’s Indigenous Australians in the census of the Australian population.

Up until then, Aboriginal people had died fighting for Australia in two world wars but were not counted as citizens of the country. The referendum was approved by 91% of the population.

An excerpt from The Color of Water by James McBride

…one afternoon on the way home from church I asked (mum) whether God was black or white.

A deep sigh. “Oh boy…..God’s not black. He’s not white. He’s a spirit.”

“Does he like black or white people better?”

“He loves all people. He’s a spirit.”

“What’s a spirit?”

“A spirit is a spirit.”

“What colour is God’s spirit?”

“It doesn’t have a colour,” she said. “God is the colour of water. Water doesn’t have a colour.”

Proud to be Inclusive

As an avid Richmond Football Club fan, it gave me great pleasure last Saturday to attend the Doug Nicholls round at the MCG.

The next two rounds of AFL celebrate the contribution of Indigenous players to the game and are named after Sir Douglas Nicholls, who was a professional athlete and one of the first Indigenous players to represent Victoria. He was a significant Aboriginal Australian from the Yorta Yorta people, who, with his wife Gladys, was an early pioneer in the campaign for reconciliation.

Each year to celebrate this important round, all players wear a specially designed jumper. This year, Marlion Pickett and his partner Jessica Nannup designed Richmond’s 2022 Dreamtime guernsey.

The story on the jumper represents Marlion, Jessica and their young family moving from Perth to Melbourne to start their Richmond journey and pays tribute to each Indigenous player at the club.

Marlion’s family totem, The Kaarak, a red-tailed black cockatoo, is represented as flying on the design to signify the family’s move across Australia.

At the Saturday night game between Essendon and Richmond, I noticed a sign constantly flashing around the ground - Proud to be Inclusive.

As Catholics, this call to be inclusive comes directly from the gospels. In this week’s Sunday readings, the congregation asks the Apostles whether this new idea of church that Jesus is promoting is to be exclusively for the Jews or for everyone, including the Gentiles?

Paul and Barnabus are sent to Jerusalem to find out the answer from the Apostles. (Acts 15:1-2)

The instruction from the Apostles after the Council of Jerusalem is very clear. The message of Jesus is for all those who listen with an open heart.

So as we watch football over the next two weeks and prepare for Reconciliation Week next week, let’s think about the connection of our gospel message to the daily lives of those we encounter each day.

Catholic Regional College Melton is a multicultural and diverse community. We are all called to be Proud to be Inclusive each and every day.

From the Deputy Principal Learning and Teaching

Educators are continually looking at ways to enhance students’ confidence in learning. Growth mindset research has been invaluable in supporting this.

“A growth mindset means that you believe your intelligence and talents can be developed over time. A fixed mindset means that you believe intelligence is fixed—so if you’re not good at something, you might believe you’ll never be good at it.”

As parents and educators, we can teach young people to embrace a growth mindset. Simply rephrasing the statement ‘’I can’t do this’’ to ‘’I can’t do this yet” provides a different approach to solving problems, learning new skills and building resilience.

Our Year 10 and 11 students are finalising Semester 1 assessment tasks and beginning their preparation for exams. Their Year Level Coordinators have sent out the exam timetable and will provide all other relevant information. Full school winter uniform is required.

If a student is absent from an exam, the normal absence processes should be followed. An exam catch-up day has been included.

Below is a copy of the exam timetable.

Yr 10 Exam Timetable June 2022

Yr 11 Exam Timetable June 2022

Here are some simple study tips to help students prepare for the upcoming exams:

  • Have access to a quiet space at home.
  • Create a study timetable.
  • Create mind-maps for each topic.
  • Study with a friend, explain concepts to each other.
  • Keep mobile phones out of the study space to avoid distraction.
  • Practice skills that will be examined.
  • Take regular short breaks.
  • Eat and sleep well.
  • Start revising Term 1 work straight away.
  • Stay on top of the current topics of work in Term 2.

Our Year 12 VCE students and Year 11 students undertaking Unit 3/4 VCE subjects are working on completing Unit 3 this semester. Teachers will begin Unit 4 once coursework and SACs are complete.

I commend all Year 7 and Year 9 students on completing NAPLAN Online. This was the first year we moved to the online testing platform and most students arrived with their laptops or iPads fully charged and ready to begin on time. Thank you to Mrs Loretta Kalms and Mr Paul Iannazzo, our NAPLAN Coordinators, for the organisation, leadership and smooth transition to the online platform.

Athletics Carnival

Last Thursday staff and students headed out to Bridge Road Athletics Track for the annual College Athletics Carnival.

We were blessed with some good weather on the day and our Year 12 students wore some very creative costumes, opening the carnival with a parade down the 100m straight.

Throughout the day, students participated in a range of track, field and novelty events and collected house points for their efforts. They displayed resilience, sportsmanship and endeavour throughout the day.

Below are the final results:

1st place: Reed on 2678 points

2nd place: Fitzgerald on 2548 points

3rd place: Daffey on 2416 points

4th place: Glasheen on 2338 points

Our House MVPs for Athletics will be awarded at our next full school assembly on Monday 30 May.

A special mention to Social Justice Coordinator Trish Griffin and the Social Justice Action Team for organising the World’s Greatest Shave fundraiser on the day. The team worked hard spraying hair colour and painting faces, and a big thank you to everyone who donated!

World’s Greatest Shave

Three Year 12 students raised more than $2000 for the World’s Greatest Shave campaign at our annual Athletics Carnival last week.

Cooper, Euan and Nicholas shaved their heads for the cause, raising funds to help families battling blood cancer receive the special care and support they need.

Money raised will also help scientists continue their search for better ways to diagnose and treat blood cancer more effectively, and ultimately find a cure.

Our Social Justice Action Team also raised $340 from their face painting and hair colouring stall on the day that will go to the Greatest Shave and the Cancer Council.

2022 Hildegard Literary Prize

There are less than two weeks left for students to enter CRC Melton’s annual writing competition, the Hildegard Literary Prize.

This year’s topic is Imagine If and students are welcome to submit any form of text such as a short story, poetry, reflection, report etc up to a maximum of 1400 words.

There will be a Senior Prize for students in Year 10 to 12 and a Junior Prize for those in Year 7 to 9.

All entries should be in a Microsoft Word document and emailed to me at cfox@sfcc.vic.edu.au. The writer’s name should not appear in the document – blind judging by a panel will determine the winners. The judges’ decision is final.

Entries close on Friday 3 June and the winners will be announced in the last week of Term 2. Winning entries will be published in the 2022 Shared Stories Anthology and in the 2022 College Yearbook.

For advice on how to get started, students are welcome to contact me or our English Domain Leader Ms Kezi Todd.

Year 7 Artist

The work of Year 7 artist Raphael impressed our Visual Communication teacher Amy Rowley when he visited her Year 10 class last week.

Below is some of Raphael’s work and a description of what art means to him.

“What I like about art is all the imagination you can come up with and just draw it on a piece of paper, a bit like a mental printer. I like drawing because you don’t need a lot of stuff and feel calm and focused on your masterpiece. I hope my work can inspire lots. Peace.”

2023 Italy Trip

In late 2023, the College will run a student trip to Italy.

All 2023 Year 10 and 11 students who meet the College’s criteria for overseas trips are invited.

A family meeting and information night will be held in Term 3 about the trip, including costs, itinerary and application process.

More information will also be provided via the newsletter in the coming weeks.

Student Leaders in the Spotlight

This week our Fitzgerald and Reed house captains provide an insight to their roles and upcoming events.

Hero Rosales – Fitzgerald House Captain – Year 12

What is the most important role of a House Leader?

A house leader is a role model for students in their house and the entire school. You need to act appropriately, encourage others to do the right thing, and set an example for students in the younger year levels. A house leader is also active in the school community and participates in events and activities.

Moreover, the most critical role of a house leader is to actively promote the school values in our learning, the way we communicate, and our everyday lives.

What are some of the events you have planned for 2022?

We are planning events suited to the wide range of students at the College in collaboration with other house leaders and captains in the leadership team.

At the moment, we have a variety of sporting activities such as a three-point basketball competition and a volleyball tournament. We’ve also planned art and media competitions such as drawing and photography contests, and a pop culture quiz that will run on SIMON.

We are also thinking about academic-related activities such as a creative writing contest and general knowledge trivia that incorporates questions from literary texts, history, geography, math, science, and the fine arts.

Most importantly, participants and winners of these events will earn house points and prizes. We hope the variety of activities will encourage every student to be more active in our school community.

Ellie Grainger – Fitzgerald House Captain – Year 12

How well is your house doing so far this year? How well have students responded to activities?

Our house has done pretty well this year - the Swimming Carnival and Multisports Day and the Ks for Caritas were highlights. Many students got involved, and we would like to give a special mention to Findlay Donachie from 9 Lok-Lok 2, who ran more than 20 laps for Caritas!

We also congratulate our Swimming Carnival MVPs Reagan George and Ellie Martin who demonstrated amazing school spirit.

I encourage everyone from Fitzgerald to get involved in the many upcoming activities.

Aside from earning points, why should students get involved in house events?

Students should get involved in house events as it allows them to be involved within the school community and interact with students from all different year levels. There are a wide variety of house events throughout the year to cater for everyone. Students should check the daily bulletin on SIMON to find out how to win house points!

Nicholas Borg - Fitzgerald Deputy House Captain – Year 12

What is the best thing about being a House Leader?

The best thing about being a house leader is that you get to be involved in leadership meetings and create fun events for students to participate in. You become a role model for the entire school so it’s a pretty big deal.

What College event are you most looking forward to this year?

The school event I was looking forward to was last week’s Athletics Carnival. I couldn’t wait to see Fitzgerald race their way to victory, and show off my amazing costume.

Daniel Cordoba Lozano – Reed House Captain – Year 12

What is the most important role of a House Leader?

I think it’s to communicate with the school community and be able to solve any issues. We are seen as role models and act in such a way to inspire future leaders. House leaders wear their badge proudly, show compassion and are determined to do everything in their power to make their school a better place for all.

What are some events you have planned for 2022?

The Athletics Carnival is always a highlight for us and all those who compete. A competitive soccer game and three-point basketball contest are being planned along with other events yet to come in 2022.

Paris Hester - Reed House Captain – Year 12

How well is your house doing so far this year? How well have students responded to activities?

So far this year Reed is doing very well! Students in all year levels have been consistently keen to get involved and shown a great spirit and support of their peers and other houses!

Aside from earning points, why should students get involved in house events?

Students should continue to get involved in our house activities as it is a great way to stay connected with their peers, engage in physical activities and meet new people.
