Sunday’s Gospel tells of the newly risen Jesus appearing amongst his closest disciples shortly after the extract above, on the road to Emmaus.
In both cases, the disciples failed initially to truly see Jesus. Who can blame them? The days after Jesus’ excruciating death on the cross would have been dark ones for his followers.
Had they not all thrown their lot in with this charismatic leader who had a philosophy of love and equality for all? Weren’t they following someone truly special who questioned the authorities, both Jewish and Roman, who had his life snuffed out in a brutal fashion?
So it is not surprising that these disciples did a double-take when Jesus appeared among them. Unsurprisingly, they needed a little time to see what was unexpectedly in front of them.
After Easter, we too have met the resurrected Jesus on the road to Emmaus and are challenged to recognise Him in all those around us and bear witness by living the life he urges us to lead.
Welcome back for Term 2 and I hope that you could spend time with family over the Easter break.
In last Sunday’s Gospel reading from Luke, we hear how Jesus gave the apostles the gift of peace.
“Peace be with you.” The apostles are so overjoyed they cannot speak and realise that Jesus is still present with them despite the events of Good Friday. Jesus sends the disciples out to preach and teach “all the nations”.
As a Catholic community, we share this commission. So as we commence Term 2, it is timely to ask ourselves:
Are we ready to be Christ’s witness?
Do we live out in our ordinary lives our great joy in the Christ of the resurrection?
How are we helping to make God's word real in this world? God’s Word Daily Reflections 2021.
I wish all of our students, staff and families a healthy and productive Term 2.
Update of College policies
As discussed in previous newsletters, Melbourne Archdiocese Catholic Schools (MACS) began its governance responsibilities for parish and diocesan schools in the Archdiocese on 1 January 2021, when 290 schools transferred to MACS, including the five Federation of Catholic Regional College schools.
Work has begun on transitioning our College, the Federation and Catholic Education Melbourne policies to MACS policies. For ease of identification, these updated documents will include MACS in the naming convention. Most of the content will remain the same and we will communicate significant changes in future newsletters.
The first phase of this rollout includes several Child Safety documents. These are currently being updated and, once completed, will be available on our website. If you have any questions, please contact me at principal@sfcc.vic.edu.au.

Our annual Athletics Carnival will be held this Thursday 22 April. Students can be dropped off at the Bridge Road Athletics Track, 82 Bridge Road, Melton South, or meet at the College and be transported by bus to the venue.
Students who meet at the College must arrive no later than 8.45am. Students who are going straight to the track must be there by 9am. Students will be dismissed from the track at 2.15pm.
There are plenty of fun events organised for the day, both on and off the track.
A highlight will be the Desmond Doss race, inspired by Christian World War II solider Desmond Doss who bravely refused to pick up a gun and worked to save men from gunfire.
The event is a 100-metre crawl that recognises Doss's Christian spirit and promotes his peaceful ideals. All students will earn house points for taking part in this special event.
Our Social Justice Committee will run a Do it for Cancer! stall at the carnival to raise money for the Cancer Council. Students can have their face painted or their hair coloured with temporary spray for a gold coin donation.

It will be a big day for our Year 8 Coordinator Ms Lauren Whitford who will shave her head at the carnival as part of the Do it for Cancer! campaign. She will be joined by Year 9 student Anna Aguirre who will also crop her locks on the day. Our student leaders have organised a BBQ with all proceeds contributing towards the Student Leadership Team’s and Student Representative Council’s fundraising efforts.
Welcome back for Term 2, 2021. I hope you all had time to recharge during the break and spend quality time with your family and friends.
The passing of Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh during the holidays brought sorrow and the opportunity for reflection. I was brought up in England, quite near to Windsor and it is during times like these I have a pang of homesickness, despite living in Australia for more than 20 years.
I am very lucky to have settled in Australia and have a strong sense of belonging. It is so important for us all to feel that we belong and connect to the different settings we find ourselves in, be it a classroom, year level, school, or workplace.
By believing we are in a place of acceptance, we can grow, develop, and expand our appreciation of who we are and of those around us.
Our College is a community where interconnectedness and quality relationships shape and affirm the identity of each of us. We encourage belonging by listening to and celebrating the stories of each member who joins to share their unique experience.
The memory of Prince Philip will continue to live on through his Duke of Edinburgh award, the memory of his service to the United Kingdom, the Royal family, and the hearts of the many lives he touched.
Please ensure your child’s uniform is neat and adheres to the College’s Uniform Policy. The uniform guidelines are also in the student diary.
The sport uniform must also be worn correctly, and only on the day your child has Physical Education. Tracksuit bottoms should not to be rolled up. If they are too long, they need to be taken up to ensure they fit correctly.
Parents and guardians should inform the College before 8.30am on a school day if their child will be absent by phoning 8099 6000 and following the prompts. Absences can also be logged via the parent portal, PAM.
Annual school photos including sibling photos will be taken at the College by Arthur Reed Photos on Thursday 29 April. Registrations for family photos will close at 12pm on Wednesday 28 April, the day before photo day.
There is no need to return any forms or money to school.
Unique image codes will be issued to all students on the photo day so families can register online to view images when they become available in the webshop.
Registration is simple; just follow the three simple steps on your child’s personalised flyer once you receive it and remember to add the codes for all your children attending the College.
Even if you registered last year, it is important that you do it again this year using your child’s 2021 image code to link their images for the current year with your contact details. If your child misplaces their code, they can contact our customer service team on 5243 4390.
When images are ready to view and in the webshop, all parents who have registered will be notified by SMS and email.
Once registered, please wait for notification that 2021 images are online to view before making your purchase.
CRC Melton will host the 2021 Youth Engagement Forum in partnership with Melton City Council.
The forum will focus on health and wellbeing. Students from Year 7 to 12 will participate in activities to discuss their ideas and personal experiences. These will be used to inform the Council and Wellbeing Plan for 2021 to 2025.

Welcome back to everyone for Term 2. We hope students relaxed and recharged during their holidays, ready for the new learning term.
Students in Year 7 and 9 will complete NAPLAN tests from Tuesday 11 May to Thursday 13 May with makeup tests on Friday 14 May if they have been absent.
Below is the schedule, mandated dates and proposed times. We ask that parents and guardians avoid making appointments for their child during the NAPLAN testing times.

Students must bring
a pen and pencil to all tests and their calculator for the numeracy tests. Please remind your child of these requirements. Parents will receive a NAPLAN report by VCAA later in the year showing their child’s achievements against the national standards.
Our Learning Diversity Leaders will contact parents and guardians of the students they support to discuss the NAPLAN Tests.
Towards the end of the year, the College will trial NAPLAN online using student devices with a proposed move to online adaptive testing in 2022.

Youth Connect will meet every fortnight in Term 2 starting this Wednesday 21 April, from 4pm to 6pm.
Join Father Marcus, Ms Crocitti and the Dominican Sisters for an evening of games, fellowship, prayer and an opportunity for reconciliation. The group will meet in the PAC foyer and Chapel.

In the final week of Term 1, 27 students competed in the SACCSS Swimming Carnival at Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre.
In the lead up to the carnival, students trained at 7am every Thursday at Melton Waves. Their hard work was rewarded with some fantastic swims on the day.
I would like to make special mention of our Year 7 and 8 students Arna Maloney, Olivia Dando, Hayley Wright, Malachi Fox, Erin Johnstone and Isabella Debrincat who did the College proud competing for our school in age groups higher than their own.
A big thanks also to our swim team captains Alla Rowley and James Morrow who supported and led the students on the day.
Congratulations to our individual age group champions (pictured below from left to right): Jack Morrow (14 years), James Morrow (17-20 years), Oliver Dreaver (13 years) and Marlee Leetham (14 years).
While all raced exceptionally well, Jack’s swims were outstanding and saw him come first in every race he competed in.
CRC Melton also received the following awards on the day: 1st Junior Boys; 2nd Junior Girls, Senior Boys and Aggregate Junior Level; 3rd Intermediate Girls.
Well done to all of our swimmers!
I would also like to thank our swimming coach and past student of the College, Jesse O’Rourke for all of her hard work to prepare students for the carnival.
On the last day of Term 1 we held our first Longest Kick Competition on the oval during lunchtime.
Many students competed and made multiple attempts to achieve the longest distance, contributing points to their house.
Some students displayed remarkable skills, launching drop punts and even some torpedos down the length of the oval. The inclusive environment enabled students who were new to the sport to learn the skills required for kicking the ball whilst also earning house points.
Staff were also well represented on the day and very competitive, adding an extra layer of entertainment.

Boys: Lincoln Braszell – Year 9
Girls: Dhillon Meredith – Year 8
Senior competition
Boys: Reuben Riveria - Year 12
Girls: Bagena Malua - Year 12
All winners earned themselves a $20 canteen voucher and extra points for their respective houses.
Glasheen earned the most points on the day, notching up 95, and were the best represented house in the competition.

The eSafety Commissioner will run a free webinar for parents and guardians in May on how to set up devices and apps to keep young people safer online.
CRC Melton is an eSafety school and these sessions are very informative and easy to join, even if you’re not that familiar with technology. The webinar will include practical tips, demonstrations and advice.
The webinars are aimed at parents and guardians of children aged four to 13. Although most CRC Melton students are older than this, families who also have younger children may find the strategies helpful.

Catholic School Parents Victoria (CSPV) invites parents to join a free webinar this Saturday 24 April by leading anxiety speaker and educator Dr Jodi Richardson.
Jodi is the co-author of Anxious Kids and a regular media commentator on anxiety, wellbeing, and parenting issues.
The free 90-minute webinar will be held from 10.30am to 12pm and provide parents with strategies on responding to and helping a child struggling with anxiety and advice on when to seek professional help.

The Parish of Melton will this week begin its special Lectio Divina Series - Breaking down the Word of God.
The series will run for six weeks starting tomorrow, Wednesday 21 April and
conclude on Wednesday 26 May. These sessions will break down the Word of
God for the following weekend mass.
Each session commences in the Parish Meeting Room after Wednesday morning mass, approximately 9.45am.

Melton Young Communities and headspace Melton will run a number of Bright Mind Sessions during Term 2 .
The sessions in the coming weeks will explore what mental health is, self-care and how to practice it and ways to develop resilience and combat bullying.
