VCE Studio Arts introduces students to the role and practices of artists in society. Students develop an understanding of the way artists work in a range of cultures and periods of time, the artists’ perceptions, beliefs and actions and their relationship with the viewer.
Student research focuses on critical, reflective and creative thinking, the visual analysis of artworks and the investigation of how artists have interpreted sources of inspiration and influences in their art making. Students examine how artists develop their practice and have used materials, techniques and processes to create aesthetic qualities in artworks. They study how artists have developed style and explored their cultural identity in their artwork. Students use this knowledge to inform their own studio practice and to support art making. With the bonsai tree as the main focal point of the work, I wanted to root its existence within the piece to demonstrate the idea of the natural and artificial world coexisting, despite being such contradictory worlds. I chose to name the work Evergrow, in reference to nature’s constancy and eternity, despite the drastically changing urban world around it. The minimalism of the tree and the monochromatic golden colour of its leaves draws on the idea that simplicity can outshine grandeur extraordinarily.

With this artwork, I wanted to purely explore the characteristics of water and how it reflected light. I wanted to achieve a reflective surface on the road, and through this, reflect the vibrant colours of the glowing jellyfish. The meaning that I wanted to achieve with this artwork was to establish that the jellyfish were part of this scene, that these two worlds of fantasy and reality coexisted. I further reinforced this idea through the coloured reflections of the Wandering Lanterns on the winding road.

Within The Ghost Of, I wanted to illustrate my fascination with the materials, objects, and entities that revolve around the darker side of death, as well as express my frustrations and negative emotions through this piece.

Untitled Grave is meant to reflect upon the despondency around an unknown loss, as depicted through the subject matter. I created this piece as a way to manifest the feelings of disconnection and isolation from the world around, as well as the feelings of self-loss.

Hundreds of children, women and men fleeing prosecution, civil war or famine cross the sea. Many of them do not reach the promised land, free of violence and corruption. A country or province with opportunities and safety. A country that represents a future without anguish, despair, and hopelessness. This artwork encapsulates the perilous nature of the sea and the hope and courage of refugees, despite their circumstances.

Many refugees and asylum seekers resort to crossing the sea, that is extremely unpredictable and dangerous. My artwork entitled displacement aims to highlight the why refugees and asylum seekers flee, the immense danger of the sea and the great number of people who die in the sea.
